ARCH202 Design Studio IV

Discussing the concepts such as place, history, past, present, future. Regarding these discussions, investigating natural and built/cultural environments. Developing spatial-architectural solutions based on structure, construction, sustainability, old-new contexts, Making studio work accordingly.

ARCH 204 Communications IV

Main learning outcome of the class is to produce architectural presentations using 2D and 3D drawing techniques with CAD softwares. Finalize, analyze and make arrangements on the design idea with the help of CAD softwares.

ARCH 206 Material and Technology II

Gaining the ability to perceive the problems related to the structure in the design process in advance. Investigating structural systems and materials such as masonry, skeleton frame, wood, steel, reinforced concrete, mixed, with a focus on details.

ARCH 208 History and Theory II

Discussing architecture in different cultures and periods. A comparative overview of premodern universal architecture outside the Islamic geography. Architecture in the first high cultures, Antiquity, Medieval Europe, China, and India.

ARCH 210 Structure II

Structural statics, environmental factors, an introduction of structure systems. Investigation of advanced applications. Case study project reviews and small-scale applications. It is aimed to give information about structural systems to architectural students during the design phase. Within the scope of the course, it is planned to show the load effects and Turkish Building Earthquake Code on the structural design.

ARCH 222 Readings in Architecture (Departmental Elective)

This course aims to provide a historical grasp of architectural ideas through selected books of architects. It also concentrates on the origins of architectural theories, the pioneering thoughts in the well-known architectural canon.

ARCH 301 Design Studio V

Considering the problem of building “the new” regarding upper urban scale. Reading urban texture, analyzing in different scales and contents. Developing projects for specific sites, making studio work accordingly.

ARCH 302 Design Studio VI

Considering space, place and time in all aspects. Developing interpretations on contemporary design problems and possible solutions with design and production processes of complicated programs. Developing projects and solutions that would problematise new-old materials, new-old technics and technologies in architectural design

ARCH 303 Conservation ve Design

Introduction to conservation and architectural heritage and related concepts. Gaining a practical understanding of technical concepts, analysis methods and design methods such as statistical survey, restitution, restoration, monument, protected area, historical environment, sanitation, renewal. Gaining familiarity with conservation cases, world renown charters, legal regulations and current protection legislation in Turkey.

ARCH 304 City and Design

Introduction to general concepts of the city and the development of them throughout history. The basic concepts of urban design and planning. Infrastructure knowledge required for designing at the urban scale.

ARCH 305 Material and Technology III

Goals of the course are to gain knowledge about designing building elements and components, building construction methods and integration of building elements and components with the remaining sub-systems of the building, and to gain ability to use this theoretical knowledge within a design problem.

ARCH 306 Material and Technology IV

Understanding the key issues in preliminary design, final design and construction projects, and building production and construction processes. Drawing the construction project of a determined project.

ARCH 307 History and Theory III

An overview of the process of formation and development of architectural accumulation in the Islamic geography. Regional diversifications from the Arabian Peninsula to Maghreb. Examining the architecture from the 10th century on to the modern times in Iran and Central Asia, pre-Ottoman Anatolia, Ottoman, and the Republic of Turkey.

ARCH 308 History and Theory IV

Looking generally at the architectural activities and approaches of the historical events and the changes summarized under the name of Modernity starting from the 15th century. Examining the approaches coming into question almost anywhere in the world and in Turkey. Discussing changes in world architecture after the Second World War and contemporary architectural problems.

ARCH 401 Design Studio VII

Discussing spatial, structural, constructive issues while focusing on building material and preferences. Questioning the expressions and concepts of tectonic-atectonic, material-immaterial. Making studio works accordingly.T he aim of this project is, students, to use their full potential before the diploma project, and approach the architectural design from all scales –micro scale to macro scale–, layers and levels.

ARCH 402 Diploma Project

Questioning the abilities gained in the architectural education process over a specific design issue. Gaining the ability to combine the knowledge of architectural terminology, interdisciplinary knowledge and technical issues. Reaching to the degree of developing and representing an architectural project independently.

ARCH 403 Detail and Design

Making alternative evaluations on the concept of detail in architecture. Understanding detail production in architecture as equivalent to idea production. Understanding that architectural detail is a cultural and critical content closely related to the history of architecture and the history of structure. Examining the concept of detail in modern architecture through examples.

ARCH 404 Profession and Practice

General information about the actors and functioning of the construction sector. Sharing experiences from private or public institutions and organizations involved in the design and the construction sector. Basic information on legal limitations and facilities of design and construction. This course aims (i) to introduce the legal regulations related to land development and architectural practice and (ii) to provide students with an understanding of the concepts and techniques of project and construction management

ARCH 405 Introduction to Architecture II
